Mason made notes and called in Poppy, telling his inner teenager to fuck off.

This was only an interview. He thought of the other interviews lined up for the day: the autistic kid down the street from Logan, the cutie new mother up the street. Follow up on the neighbors who were out of town and had since returned. Return yet another call from Jorge Talaveras. Keep working on a mention of Celia Talaveras’ boyfriend, the elusive Jacinto. His daughter’s birthday was coming up soon. And another call from his father. He’d call him tonight. They continued playing phone tag.

Like her husband and his pricey lawyer, Poppy Sinclair found the smell in Interview Room 2 not to her taste. Her personal lawyer in a sharp Gloria Allred suit and stiletto heels followed her in. The attorney was attractive, but not many women shone around Poppy Sinclair. Poppy swooshed her fine leather bag with a Coach label across the chair before she sat down. Mason regarded her for a long moment and turned to his list of questions they’d devised with the LT who was fascinated with the Logan-Sinclair connection.

Poppy looked down at her lap and picked at an invisible spot on her skinny jeans, ignoring him. Her limbs were slightly too long, giving her the attenuated leggy body that was the current fashion ideal. Whether it was makeup or not, and Mason couldn’t tell, her fortyish skin was clear and seemed lit from within. Did she have someone come in and do her hair beginning at dawn to give her that sunny gold mane of curls? How much time did it take someone like her to get ready to face the paparazzi who must be a constant in her life? So many questions he knew he’d never get to ask.

Poppy had admitted now to knowing Celia, which made Mason’s task easier. “Your husband told us you hire people who work in the house…” he began.

“Well, I could hardly turn that over to him, could I? He makes himself useless. Derek stays as uninvolved in the household as he can, and that’s fine with me.”

Mason ratcheted down his speculations, made himself stop staring, squaring up his IPad on the table, pretending to review his notes.

“You knew her well then?”

“Hardly at all. I just remember a pleasant girl who did her work. Lupe never complained about her that I remember. And a great deal of time has passed since I’ve seen her. I have too many obligations to chat with the help.”

“Did she ever talk about boyfriends?”

“I told you. We didn’t have those kinds of conversations. Lupe dealt with her on a day-to-day basis to get the work done. My PA would notify Lupe about any changes in the twins’ schedule, when Jake was coming, what events Derek and I would be attending, alone or together, people who would be coming to the house. Jake’s Derek’s son,” she said to prompt Mason.

“Yes, I know. Do you and Mr. Logan do a lot of entertaining?” Mason didn’t even know what that might mean to people like them.
